Please note that this pottery place setting is the "real deal"! This quality stoneware is hand thrown, reduction fired and handcrafted in the US. This pottery is good-looking when used in complete settings and also separately; the plates and bowls make lovely serving dishes.
Stoneware is a durable classic type of pottery. It is nonporous and completely opaque after firing. When pottery is glaze fired, it gives rough and earthy textures and colors blended with a sturdy clay body. Glaze is simply a mixture of metal oxides and minerals mixed with water. When applied to pottery and fired at high temperatures it melts into a glassy surface that adheres to the clay body and provides a decorative surface with a wide range of colors and textures. Reduction firing is a process generally designed for gas and wood kilns, where you starve the kiln of a certain degree of oxygen. This process draws out unique colors and unexpected flashes and hues which cannot be obtained in oxidation firing. Notable characteristics of reduction firing are gentle green celadon, deep rich blues and purples, speckled molted textures and startling “one of a kind” results.
We've been asked by customers if they can purchase matching pieces at another time or buy just plates or other pieces separately. Absolutely, but please keep in mind, that although you will be able to match glaze and clay type, remember no two pieces of hand thrown pottery will be the same, they may vary in color and size.
