Accent lighting - Typically accent lights don't provide a lot of light; they highlight a focal point of interest, for example, an accent lamp on a fireplace mantle
Ambient lighting - The lighting that diffuses and washes over the whole room, for example, overhead lighting (dimmers are a great addition to control ambient lighting).
Task lighting - Task lighting is lighting that will support a specific task, for example, spotlighting a painting or lighting a pool table
Decorative lighting - Decorative lighting is when the light fixture itself is the decoration or design element, for example, a bear figurine that lights up.
